![]() Well that's a great question, but that's certainly something only Southerners should decide for themselves. What better way to represent the south? Flag-wise i mean. That flag will never, ever be free of its roots as the Confederate battle flag. Since the flag was created by the folks who wanted to keep black people in chains, it was never co-opted by racists - if anything, the non-racist folks you are talking about are trying to co-opt the flag back from the racists, or worse are just okay with sharing the flag with these racists, which again just makes no sense to me. Now, one group of jackasses taking a symbol that others love for non-hateful reasons and using it for hateful purposes really sucks, but unfortunately that is not a good defense in the case of the non-racist Confederate flag wavers. On top of that, as you yourself acknowledged, the flag has also been used by openly racist Americans as a symbol of white supremacy. Again, I do believe there are many non-racist southerners who are only waving this thing around to show their hometown pride, but the flag's ties to the Confederacy, and therefore to its racist roots, is undeniable. It started becoming prominent again early in 20th century as people became nostalgic for the old south and continued to grow in popularity over the years. Referring to it as the "Confederate Flag" is a newer development, but it was still a Confederate flag when it was created, just not the flag. It was one of the Confederate battle flags used during the war. The flag used as the modern Confederate flag was absolutely a thing at the time. It came long afterwards around the 1940-50's if I'm not mistaken. Technically and kinda sorta the flag seen nowadays generally labeled as "the Confederate flag" wasn't a thing during that time. It's not very helpful and this is a pretty important topic that people should be discussing openly and politely.
